AWE survey for students

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As you will be aware, well-being is a priority at South Island School and it is one of the key strategic goals across the Foundation. For this reason, all children in ESF schools between Year 4 and Year 13 will undertake a biannual well-being questionnaire. This will help all of us in schools to measure and track the well-being of our students though Positive Education based on online assessments.

In the week beginning 21 October, your child(ren) will complete their online questionnaire. This will occur during Tutor Time. Well-being assessment scientists and school psychology experts developed the Assessing Wellbeing in Education (AWE) assessment in 2014. The AWE survey consists of a collection of validated psychometric scales and scientifically informed questions from the psychology literature that assess various aspects of well-being. It covers all major theories of well-being, rather than one particular theory or perspective. Filling in the 35 questions should take students approximately 10 – 15 minutes.

Here at South Island School, we will receive data about each student’s well-being, and anonymised data related to classes, year groups and the whole school. This will support us to plan ways to help individuals as well as to help inform how we can make changes to flourish our school community. Each student will also receive their own personalised well-being report. These reports are written in plain English with easily interpretable graphs that track changes over time so students can monitor their own progress. We will encourage students to talk to their families and friends about the results. Having conversations about well-being, both what is going well and what is not going so well, is an effective first step towards improving well-being. Students can also talk to Tutors, Heads of Year/House and Counsellors, as always.

Further information is available at www.awesomeschools.com.

As the designated AWE link is for South Island School, please contact me if you have further questions.

With thanks and warm wishes,
Lucie Purves

Sports Bulletin – 18 October 2019

We hope everyone had a lovely half term break last week.

With the current situation in Hong Kong, unfortunately a lot of the HKSSF fixtures have been postponed by the organisers which may cause a backlog of matches to be played later in the term or school year. We will keep you updated with what happens regarding these games as soon as we know. Having said that, we are lucky to still have the ESF competitions going ahead.

On Tuesday, our A Grade Rugby Boys played against YMCA in the quarter finals of the HK schools rugby competition. It was a tough game and the match was tight throughout but SIS prevailed 33-21 and they are now through the semi-finals. Player of the match goes to Alex Lee. The semi-finals will be played on Tuesday 29 October at Happy Valley. Please come down and support the boys!

On Wednesday, our Junior Girls Football team travelled to KGV to play their next ISSFHK league game. The girls beat KGV 4-0. Great work ladies! Player of the match goes to Tessa Schraven, who scored scoring a few goals and was a great midfielder in the game. The girls are now in the play-offs which will be on Tuesday 29 October.

Thursday was a busy day for the Stingrays as we had the C Grade Boys Football, A and B Grade Boys Basketball and the HKSSF Swimming Gala at Victoria Park. The C Grade Boys Football played against YMCA and won 2-1. Player of the match goes to Moriz Ip. The A and B Grade Boys Basketball team played against Sha Tin College but unfortunately lost both games, A Grade Boys losing 34-46 and B Grade Boys losing 23-32.

Down at Victoria Park Swimming Pool, we had Day 1 of the HKSSF Div 2 Swimming Gala, with a  full day of swimming competition for the A, B and C Grade Boys. There were many standout performances by the boys where they achieved their personal best times as well as making it into the finals. Great effort from the boys and good luck to them in the finals next Thursday on 24 October at Victoria Park again.

We have a new Sports Insight team in place this year who are responsible for uploading all sports news and match reports as well as photos. For all current sports news please follow their Instagram page @sissportsinsight.

Scouts build bridges and towers at their first camp

150th Scouts spent the weekend of 12-13 October in the hills outside Tai Po building large-scale bamboo structures.

On Saturday, senior scouts led teams to build ballistas (catapults) and tossed wet sponges at each other. They spent the afternoon putting together two large signal towers. On Sunday, they built a monkey bridge and a swing.

They had a lot of fun cooking a tasty Japanese udon noodles dinner, and roasting marshmallows over a campfire. Breakfast was a traditional fry-up of heaps of bacon.

Pioneering is one of the most technical parts of the scouts curriculum, requiring hours of planning, solid engineering skills, and sound knowledge of knots and lashings.

You have to pay great attention to safety – especially when raising structures made out of heavy 15-foot (five meter) bamboo poles.

New scouts start by learning basic knots, and work on small camp gadgets like tables and chairs. They assist senior scouts on bigger projects. By their third or fourth year, most of them are ready to lead their own team to build larger structures.

The Hong Kong Scouting Association (HKSA) requires leaders to attend a two-day knotting course, followed by a month-long pioneering course. One leader must have a First Aid qualification (30 hours).
