The post-typhoon unsung heroes

It was a difficult time last week for our school with three days of closure, thanks to signal number 10 typhoon Mangkhut that swept through Hong Kong leaving widespread damage, fallen trees near our school and some of our facilities damaged.

Our school would not return to normal that quickly without the great effort from our cleaning staff and support staff. Today, the Principal and other senior staff took time to thank each and every one of them for their hard work in turning SIS back to normal despite the existence of many challenges. We are very grateful to have all the cleaning and support staff’s contribution in ensuring the school runs smoothly. Thank you!

UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge

On September 27th, sixteen SIS students from Y11 to Y13, grouped into teams of four, competed against fifty teams from seventeen schools in the UKMT Senior Team Maths Challenge held at Harrow International School. They all enjoyed tremendous fun and did well in the three rounds of the Challenge; notably, one of our teams made a close bid for the championship but had to be content with second place after a final tie breaker.
Detailed results are as follows:

SIS team 1 (2nd place)
Grant Chen Y13, Andrew Lee Y13, Amy Song Y11, Rachel Lu Y10

SIS team 2 (6th place)
James Davidson Y13, Paco Chow Y13, Jason Lee Y11, Hong Zhi Ee Y11

SIS team 3 (18th place)
Ava Kim Y13, Annie Song Y13, Toby Mak Y10, Jacob Yu Y10

SIS team 4 (33rd place)
Kevin Shen Y13, Eric Chang Y13, Jordan Chan Y12, Jinsol Lee Y11

Well done to all of them!

SIS students helped Make A Difference

Super typhoon Mangkhut no doubt caused widespread damage to Hong Kong. Trees fell down in many areas, including at the pedestrian side walks near SIS that contributed to three days of school closure. Waves also left the city’s beaches with large amount of rubbish.

Big thumbs up to Ronan Knevitt from 13N1 who agreed to participate in a beach clean up event organised by another party last weekend in Stanley, and bringing along nine other friends and schoolmates with a big boom box and tons of energy and enthusiasm! They were definitely fantastic role models for South Island. Thank you for their hard work to make a difference.

Names of the boys from left to right: Will Harris(12M1), Jules Robert (West Island School), Anton Van Der Weijst (13C1), Simon Morris (12S1), Tomo Nagai (12K2), Lars Ytterdale (13M2), Kohshin Noma(12S1), Gwion Sexton (12M1), Ronan Knevitt (13N1), John Lam (13C2)

SIS Higher Education Fair 2018

On Friday 21 September, the SIS Higher Education and Careers team hosted nearly 100 higher education institutions from around the world. The event was a great success, with students of all year groups and parents benefitting from the chance to meet with representatives who work in university admissions. Feedback from the higher education institutions was overwhelmingly positive about how wonderful our students are!

Sports Bulletin – 28 September 2018

Sports News

Another big win from our U14 junior boys football team this week. The boys travelled all the way to DBIS with a final score of 8-4. Goal scorers were Leo Doyle and Sherman Wong both scoring 3 goals, and James Stanton and Moriz Ip scoring 1 goal each. Man of the match goes to Leo Doyle!

After a break for the U16 Girls volleyball team, they are now back in action. Despite missing their trainings due to typhoon and public holidays, they still played extremely well.  The First game they played against CAIS and won 25-16 and 26-24.   The Second game they lost marginally against Singapore International School with a score of 20-25 and 13-25. In contrast, our U16 Boys Volleyball also conceded one win and one lost game. They won 25-21, 21-19 against CAIS but unfortunately they also lost to Singapore International School, 17-25 and 17-25.

Our A Grade Boys rugby played against KGV but it was a very tight match with a 0-0 score at half time and at full time!

Last Friday we hosted an ESF schools swimming gala with KGV, Island School and Shatin College all represented. The gala was ideal preparation for all teams before the forthcoming HKSSF gala. Unfortunately, due to other events in school, our A & C grade teams were lacking their normal swimmers but the boys and girls who did swim got some valuable experience for the future.

Next week our A grade teams in football, basketball, volleyball, netball and badminton begin their HKSSF leagues and the matches come thick and fast until the end of October. With MAD week and then half term it is going to be a testing time for coaches to find players available to play but we will give it our best and be competitive as always.

Good luck to all teams!

Election of a Parent Member of School Council

To: All Parents

Dear Parents,

SIS Elections 2018

Election of a Parent Member of the School Council

I write to give notice of the election of a Parent Member to a casual vacancy on the School Council of South Island School, following the completion of two consecutive terms by Janet Walker. We are extremely grateful to Janet for her six years of dedicated support for South Island School as a member of the School Council, and we are very glad that Janet’s expertise will still remain available to the SIS community on an informal basis.

The term of office of School Council members is three years.

The election arrangements require a candidate to have a proposer. I attach a nomination form to enable you to propose a candidate. The candidate must indicate in writing her/his willingness to stand and should be asked to prepare a brief personal statement setting out her/his relevant experience and stating what she/he would hope to contribute to the Council and the School.  Parent Members of the School Council may not be employees of ESF. Other than this restriction, the vacancy is open to all parents at SIS.

The deadline for the receipt of nominations is Monday, 22 October 2018 at 4pm. Nomination forms should be handed in at School Reception or posted to the school (marked for the attention of the Principal’s PA), or scanned and emailed to siscouncil@sis.edu.hk

In the event that we receive more than one nomination, SIS will be using an e-voting system, “Election Runner” to run the election. Details of how to vote will be circulated by email after the 22 October 2018, if a vote proves necessary.

Yours faithfully,

Mr. Tom Vignoles
Principal
