Message from the Principal

Welcome to another term at SIS! We hope you have all had a wonderful Easter break, during which you have managed to balance any work objectives with a well-earned rest.

This is a very important term for our Year 11 and Year 13 students, as they launch into their IGCSE and IB exams. For the next few weeks, of course we know that our students will be revising hard. Equally, it will be crucial for them to take a break when they need one – so all of our students should make sure that they allow themselves sufficient leisure time during this high pressure phase of the year! Regular sleep patterns and appropriate diet are also very important. Please encourage your son or daughter to speak with us if they are finding things difficult.

For students in other year-groups, this is an equally important time for their learning. It is during these years that the foundations of knowledge, skills and understanding are built for their subsequent success. We know that our students understand this, and that the vast majority will take every single learning experience seriously, however big or small.

We wish you all a highly successful term!

Online Safety Update

As you know, we take student safety very seriously. ESF have recently run a number of training sessions about child online safety, and we are very aware of the dangers open to young people through social media. We recently ran an assembly for our Year 9 students about accepting diversity and being aware of how you are represented on media. This was aimed at raising awareness of actions and how they affect people. This was in response to a nasty Instagram message going around that asks students to rate other students looks and popularity, even requesting them to add photos of themselves.

Unfortunately, since then we have become aware of a further unpleasant online platform, as students in Year 10 and 11 have recently reported a ‘who is hotter?’ app that has Year 10 and Year 11 girls’ photos on. Students are understandably upset that someone has published their photo in this way without their consent. However, what is good is that our students are being proactive in asking for help to stop these inappropriate actions. We are doing everything we can at the present time to have this website taken down.

ESF have also alerted us to another app that is causing a lot of concern in the UK, ‘Tik Tok’. Here is an article citing NSPCC research with 40000 children, which states that one in 20 of those who used Tik Tok were asked to take their clothes off whilst streaming on the app. We are not so far aware of anyone at our school who is using this but wanted to take this opportunity to warn you about it.

We all share the common objective of keeping your children safe. Please help us with this objective by checking your child’s devices for any of these unpleasant online platforms.

Sports Bulletin – 3 May 2019

Welcome back! We hope everyone had a lovely Easter break.

Football

On Tuesday, our Year 7 boys and girls played their first game of Football. Unfortunately, both our girls and boys’ teams were beaten by Island School although both teams played well. Woman of the match goes to Ann Ye for several important tackles in defence. The boys rotated around a lot, as there were over 20 boys in the squad, and showed that they will be a good team once they have trained together for a while.

U20 Boys Rugby

On Thursday, our U20 Boys played in their first touch rugby match for South Island School. In the first game, SIS achieved a 0-0 draw followed by a 5-0 victory for the SIS Touch Rugby team. There are two more games next week to decide whether SIS makes it to the Cup finals. Good luck to the team in next week’s games!

HKSSF Gymnastics Girls C Grade

Big congratulations to Ivana Wong for her first ever gymnastic competition! Despite tough competition, Ivana was able to stay on top of her game and came 3rd overall and scored 13.866 out of 15 for C Grade Girls Floor Exercise. She was a true player of the day and we will see her soon in the next competition.

Fencing at ISF Academy

“It is such a wonderful feeling to be able to represent SIS in the sport of fencing as SISTERS. During the competition this past Sunday at ISF, we played against each other in the final match.  We have competed head-to-head a few times in the past, but it was our first ever match in the final, meaning we were getting the Gold and Silver medals.  When we are on the piste competing, we are competitors. When we are off the piste, we are sisters who share a lot in common.  Our goal is to represent the Hong Kong Cadet Team “together” in the near future.” – From sisters Summer Fay and Summer Jane.

HKAYP Silver Award Presentation

A number of our students were awarded their Silver HKAYP Awards by the Chief Secretary of the HKSAR Matthew Cheung GBM GBS JP on 16 April 2019. Alumni updates – 2 May 2019

Robert Chik – The Class of 1995

“Lots has changed and also stayed the same.”

Robert came back to visit South Island School during the Easter break to learn what has changed since he left SIS at 1991. Learning that there is a new building and better facilities, he noticed the playground has not changed much. It was a place that reminded him of his beloved daily routine, which was to get off the school bus at the main entrance and then head straight to the Lower Playground for games before classes started.

These were not his only memories. Robert told us there used to be a musical band consisting of teachers who performed for students. What the school tour also reminded Robert was of Mrs Chapman (who is retiring this year), as well as his science teacher Ms Su Cowland and his favourite teacher Mr Martin Campion.

Asked what his favourite part of school was, Robert shared with us that the best thing at SIS was to meet people from all over the world. It was a wonderful environment for him to be introduced to different cultures and be aware of people’s differences, which prepared him for life with better people skills.

Robert came from Quarry Bay School and spent three years with Aylward House before relocating to Cape Town. After finishing his undergraduate studies, he completed his master’s degree at the University of Surrey in the UK. He is now based in Winchester, UK as a chartered structural engineer.
