SIS Open Day 2019

At South Island School, we believe that clear communication is an important component in your child’s learning. One way in which we can support this is to ensure parents know our school, understand the way we operate, appreciate the philosophy behind both our curriculum and the way it is delivered, and feel that they have a growing relationship with the staff who work in partnership with their children.

To this end, we will host an Open Day at South Island School on Friday, 13 September. During which you will be offered an insight into your children’s learning through classroom walkthroughs, school tours and information sessions on the curriculum and pastoral care. We will send more detailed information closer to the date, but please mark the date on your calendar.

Sports Bulletin – 30 August 2019

Our activities programme gets underway next week which we are all looking forward to. The number of students signing up for activities is incredible although this has brought its own dilemma in trying to give everyone at least one of their choices. This is not easy when some activities have a limit on numbers due to facilities and staffing but we have done our best to try and accommodate everyone. Unfortunately, some students may not have received a top activity choice yet but we are working on a solution to give them priority in their preferred activity in Term 2. It is also clear that some activities are more popular than others. Some activities have a waiting list of 50 students, so we are also working on a way to offer these clubs more often throughout the week, again taking into account facilities and staffing.

We thank you all for your patience and understanding as we continually work to improve the ECA offering to our students.

As the activities get underway we will have some of our school teams representing SIS in competitions and the first competition of the year saw the A Grade Boys Rugby team participate in a 10-a-side Tournament at HKIS on Tuesday. It was very hot in the afternoon and after losing to HKIS 10-7, they were able to put in an impressive performance against Sha Tin College, winning 31-5. Well done to all the boys who played in the season-opener and we look forward to our Rugby teams achieving even more success this year after a very good season last year.

Have a good weekend.

Regards,

Jon Redding
Director of Sports and Extra Curricular

Invitation to Parents’ Presentation by Prof Yong Zhao

We are delighted to share with you an interesting presentation to our ESF parent community, Prof Yong Zhao’s Keynote: “What Matters: Effects and Side Effects of Education“.

In this presentation, Professor Yong Zhao brings extensive evidence to show that every child has both potential and the need to become great. To help each and every child achieve their greatness, we need a different kind of education that focuses on enhancing the unique strengths and passion of each child. Education is to help each and every child discover and develop their strengths and passion with the goal to create value for others and the world. To do so, have we considered making education personalisable by the child, instead of personalised for the child?

The presentation will take place on Saturday 7 September at Quarry Bay School, from 9:00am to 10:30am. This is on a first-come, first-served – maximum 300 places.

Save the date – 18 October for Diwali Night 2019!

Dear Parents,

This year, we are very excited to announce South Island School’s annual celebration of Diwali Night! Diwali Night is a student-led event held every year in our school to celebrate the victory of good over evil and the Festival of Lights. Diwali Night showcases a wide range of performances from singing to dancing. All money made from this event will be donated to World Vision India; an organisation dedicated to helping underprivileged kids by providing them with a better future.

This year, Diwali Night will be taking place on 18 October 2019 from 6:30 – 9:30pm and the theme is Bollywood Rewind. An announcement has already gone out for students about the event, including where to sign up for auditions and volunteering. The deadline for student auditions and MC sign-ups has been changed to 31 August.  We hope to see all parents come and participate in this festive event!

Thank you,
Diwali Night Head Team 2019
