Celebrating Year 7-9 InSoc Students’ Creativity

During Year 7 lessons, students have been learning about how we can take action about being more sustainable. Sophia Yim (7C1) used one of the sustainability suggestions from one of the lessons and made a mini garden on her roof. You can see her video here.

In Year 8 the cohort recently completed an assessment where they had to develop their research, collaboration and digital literacy skills. The students produced creative, well organised and informative websites about China. Yr 8 parents should have received an email from the class inviting them to have a look at their work.

Here are some of the wonderful examples of what our students have achieved during this distance learning period:

China Challenge

All About Hebei

Culture of Shaanxi

How Has History Affected The Economy of Shaanxi

Year 9 students were given an opportunity to exhibit their Just War Artefacts/ Visual Representations on padlet with the rest of the community here

It has been great to see how creative, motivated and collaborative they have been even during these distance learning time.

Distance Learning – Classcraft

Congratulations to Shannon D’Souza (9N2) and Reiya Seth (9M1), the first two students to ‘level up’ in our Y9 Digital Media (Creative Arts) pilot, which makes use of the learning platform, Classcraft. The platform provides the opportunity for the gamification of education whereby students complete quests as avatars within the context of a fantasy world, often in teams, whilst engaging with their usual class tasks. Experience points can be gained for positive contributions to lessons and the successful completion of tasks and assessments.

Reiya has been studying news journalism: exploring the context of migration, tabloid representation of migrants and digital tools helpful in debunking fake news. As young journalists, Reiya and her peers will have the chance to create a short film later this term, which explores an issue faced by the local community.

Shannon has been studying the horror genre in Integrated Arts:Media considering the techniques associated with suspense and the technical skills required to create compelling jump scares. Students will also have an opportunity to apply their learning to the construction of a short film exercise, before the end of term.

Inter House Sports Quiz Challenge Results

The Inter House Sports Quiz Challenge for Years 7 to 11 took place from Monday 20th till Friday 24th April 2020. Students had to correctly identify (name) and spell 20 sports from a picture. No students were able to score 20/20 but three students scored 19/20 and nine students scored 18/20. So a big well done to those students. Click here for full results.

Year 8 French Postcards

Congratulations to all our Y8 French students who explored their journey into a chosen fictional holiday destination and shared their experience sending postcards in French. The writing skill can be a real challenge in French and all our students overcame their challenge through online dedication. Here are a few of many examples to celebrate!

Un grand Bravo à tous!

Year 9 Integrated Arts (Visual Arts)

Students have investigated the concept of ‘chiaroscuro’ as part of an inquiry into the power of light. In Visual Art they have created images using ‘low tech’ cameras and lighting in their home environments and then manipulated these to create distortions using Photoshop software. The students will now connect their learning between Visual Arts and Media by transferring these concepts into film, with a focus on the genre of horror. Some examples are here

Year 9 Chinese Poetry Alive & Festivals

Y9 CX101 launched the online Poetry Alive before the Easter holidays. Students gave recital performances on either their poems or their favourite poems during their Chinese lessons. These poems covered a variety of topics, including gender, human relationship and lives under COVID-19.  Here are some poems created by CX201 students.

Food and festivals are cultural symbols of a country. Y9 CX107 and CX108 have completed the Unit on Festivals and they have created a brochure to introduce one local festival and one festival they like. In this project, students are asked to reflect on what they have learnt about the concepts of “culture, context and meaning”.  They have researched the meaning of the festivals and have used the sentence patterns and vocabulary learnt in class to introduce the festivals and express their thoughts. Here are some examples of their work.
