Issue No. 34 (24 May 2019)

Making a difference by planting trees

8 dedicated students trekked out to Lantau to plant trees with Paul Melsom from Eagle Owl during the last CPD Day on 14 May.

The students did a fantastic job planting around 30 native tree seedlings.

Some of the tree seedlings, Polyspora axillaris, that were planted were grown from seeds at school by students from the Year 10 and Year 11 horticultural enrichment classes. This project continues to be a really good way to make a difference where the combined contribution of a number of year groups will make a lasting impression on Lantau’s forest ecosystem. A big thank you to Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden for supplying additional diverse native tree species seedlings.

Biology Field Trip

Over 80 SL and HL Biology students were busy learning about Rocky Shore Ecology during the annual Biology Field Course, which took place on 17-21 May at Tai Tam and Little Palm Beach. Despite one day being disrupted by adverse weather conditions, the students and staff worked really hard and were all able to collect data on a variety of marine organisms. They will write a scientific report as an important practice internal assessment. This gave us all a chance to appreciate Hong Kong’s rich marine biodiversity as well as learning important fieldwork techniques.

Sports Bulletin – 24 May 2019

Last Wednesday 15 May, 43 boys and girls from Years 8, 9 and 10 travelled to Phuket to participate in a two-day sports competition held at the British International School, Phuket. It was a two-full-day competition with a day of basketball and a day of football. Our U13 Girls came 3rd for Football and 4th for Basketball. The U13 Boys came 2nd for Basketball and 4th for Football. Great results from all the teams!

On Tuesday, our Year 8 girls participated in the ESF Basketball Tournament held at WIS. They played against KGV, STC, IS and WIS. 14 girls participated in the competition and they came 4th overall. The Year 8 boys played at SIS against the other four ESF schools. It started off quite tough for the boys but they managed to work as a team and found their own pace and game. It was a very close competition overall as we had to count the points difference and SIS boys managed to go through to the finals against IS and win the whole competition.

On Wednesday, our Badminton Boys and Girls competed in the ESF Badminton Tournament at Sha Tin College. With a majority of the A and B key players away due to exams, we ended up finishing in 5th place. Well done to all students who participated.

On the same day, the SIS Frisbee Team lost a well fought encounter to Korean International 12-5. The team are making improvements every game. Players of the match: Luca Ho & Clarence Mak.

The U12 Girls Football Team played against CAIS on Wednesday and drew 2-2. The goals were scored by Ann Ye and Sophie Callow. It was a much improved performance from the whole team. Woman of the match goes to Lise Rodier for her solid performance in midfield.

On Thursday, our Year 7 Boys Football Team travelled to KGV to play against their Year 7 boys. Unfortunately SIS A Team boys lost to KGV A Team 8-0 in the first game, and in the second game SIS B Team lost 2-4 to KGV B Team. Great work from the team, good luck in their games next week!

Chickenpox precautionary measures

Dear Parents,

South Island School is committed to maintaining a healthy school environment for everyone, therefore we work very closely with the Department of Health and the Education Bureau to ensure that the school is up-to-date with all the latest government guidelines. Community issues do require a community effort if we are to keep infection at a minimum and have control measures to keep our school safe and healthy.

Health & Safety Guidelines

Chickenpox

Chickenpox (varicella) is an acute infectious disease caused by the varicella-zoster virus. It predominantly affects children under 12 years of age. Although almost all persons develop lifelong immunity after a chickenpox infection, the virus may remain latent in the body and recur many years later.

Clinical features

  • Patients usually start with a fever and itchy skin rash.
  • Rashes develop in crops over a period of 5 days on the body, then spread to the face, arms and legs.
  • The rash first appears as flat spots and later as vesicles. The vesicles continue for 3 – 4 days, then dry up and form scabs.
  • Patients usually recover in about 2 – 4 weeks.
  • Persons who have received the chickenpox vaccination may still develop chickenpox.

Mode of transmission

  • Can be spread through droplets or air.
  • Can also spread through direct or indirect contact.

Incubation period

  • 10 – 21 days, usually 14 – 16 days

Infectious period

Usually 1 – 2 days before the rash appears and until all vesicles have dried up. It is extremely contagious, especially in the early stage of rash eruption.

Complications

Chickenpox is generally a mild disease and is usually self-limiting. However, secondary bacterial infection of the wound may occur. Those with weakened immunity or who are pregnant are most likely to suffer from severe complications. New-born babies who develop chickenpox can become severely ill and even die. Infection in early pregnancy may be associated with congenital malformation of the foetus.

Management

  • Consult the doctor to understand the condition and follow the health professional’s advice and medication to relieve symptoms.
  • If the patient has fever, drink plenty of water and have adequate rest.
  • Wear clean cotton gloves during sleep to prevent scratching of the vesicles which may cause infection and scarring.
  • Avoid contact with pregnant women and persons with weakened immunity.
  • Sick children should stay at home and be excluded from schools/kindergartens/child care centres until all vesicles have dried up, usually about 1 week after appearance of rashes to prevent spreading the disease to others.
  • Parents should closely monitor the child’s condition. If the child persistently runs a fever, refuses to eat or drink, vomits or looks drowsy, immediate medical attention should be sought.
  • Parents should also closely monitor other children in the household for signs and symptoms of chickenpox.

Prevention

  • Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene.
  • Chickenpox vaccine is available in Hong Kong. About 90% of persons who receive the vaccine will acquire immunity.
  • Under the Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme, children receive a two-dose course of chickenpox vaccination. Parents may consult family doctors or maternal and child health centres for details.
