School Photo Orders 2018-19

Dear Parents,

Techni Photo have an online platform for ordering the school photos that were taken of your child. You are able to place your order and make payment online.

To facilitate ordering, your child has been provided with a Proof Card. Please login to the website www.techni-photo.com/order with the information provided on the Proof Card and follow the instructions here.  The online order deadline is 29 March 2019.  This will be the only method of ordering photographs this year.

ICM’s Family Festival

You are all warmly invited to ICM’s Family Festival in support of their Family Academy programme!

Date: Saturday 23 March
Time: 1:00-4:00pm

As a school, we have supported ICM’s Jumpstart Kindergarten/Family Academy programmes for the last 5 years, raising HK$70,000 per year to ensure that children from ultra-poor families in Bacolod get the educational start they deserve.

The purpose of this Family Festival on 23 March is to raise awareness for the Family Academy programme, allowing people to understand how education is provided to children living in poverty in the Philippines. There will be food, activity booths, games and special guests from the ICM’s Children’s Choir, and a chance to experience authentic Filipino cooking and culture firsthand. Please come along with your family and find out more about this valuable programme that has been at the heart of the SIS ‘Making A Difference’ for so long.

Sunday

The sailing Team worked really hard against the poor weather conditions this weekend. Unfortunately, next to no wind or luck meant by the end of the day on Sunday they had to abandon their last race. The race manager could only race the top 4 spots in the 2 divisions in the end, so the rest of the teams did not place. However, the small team had great spirits throughout the weekend. They are definitely keen to compete again next year with hopefully a bigger team.

Monday

SIS C1 Netball team were on fire, winning their 2nd HKSSF match 23-0! Amazing defence by all girls@ Goals scored would have been even higher had we not changed positions around a little bit. Students choice for MVP: Amelie Conlin. Coaches choice for MCP: Vivienne Chung.

 

Wednesday

SIS C2 Netball team beat the French International School 12-7. It was a great game with some awesome set plays demonstrated by the girls! The score could have been even higher, but we umpired firmly for when the girls face tougher opponents. The MVPs are as follows: Maisy Redding (FIS choice), Riya Rao (student choice) and Dalveen Brar (coach Naetra choice). A good day in the office!

 

Thursday

SIS B Grade Rugby beat Harrow 55-22. Tries were shared around many members of the team. Player of the match: Will Rees.

 

Upcoming…

The senior boys will play their rearranged Jing Ying football final this Sunday at 2pm at Mong Kok Stadium. All tickets held from the postponed game last weekend are valid for the rearranged match. We hope to see as many of the South Island community as possible in attendance and cheering the boys on.

SIS PTA Parent Education Evening – 28 March 2019

The SIS PTA is happy to offer the following session for Y10-Y13 parents, presented by Elevate Education, Singapore. It will be held on 28 March 2019.

This organisation was also engaged to deliver the targeted Study Skills Workshops to our Y10 and 11 students. Y11’s have already had 2 workshops – ‘Study Sensei’ and ‘Ace Your Exams’. The workshop for Y10 students will be on 25 March 2019.

This is a good opportunity for our parents to reinforce the message received by our students and learn how to support their child as they prepare for exams. If you are interested in attending, please CLICK HERE to register by 22 March 2019.

Empathy, creativity and chalk: 3 words to describe Bahay MaD Week 2019

Under the theme of sustainability, Bahay MaD Week was certainly a handful: empathy, creativity…. and chalk.

The week started off with a sprawling chalk drawing activity at the lower playground on Monday snack. Students were encouraged to draw for their house what sustainability meant to them: slogans, art, even murals.

Wednesday snack time at the lower playground was the place to be for trick shot enthusiasts. Students had to try and hit plastic bottles into recycling bins – in 3 shots or less. The prize? An exclusive SIS Sustainability Council badge and candy.

Friday was a day of empathy. Whether it was dressing sustainably to encourage a consideration of sustainability in the quotidian morning routine of choosing an outfit, or thrashing the other houses in a feisty game of waterpolo amongst a pool of plastic bottles, students were encouraged not just to think of themselves, but for what their actions meant in the wider world around them.

All proceeds (HK$8,191 in all) are going to the Kadoorie Farm and Botanical Garden, an NGO dedicated to conservation and sustainability. But more importantly, it was a chance to encourage sustainability in a way that was both relevant and engaging in their lives – a potential blueprint for how the centuries-long issue of sustainability could sow the seeds of change in the generations of students to come.

Re-scheduled Jing Ying Football Final – this Sunday 2pm kick off

Dear Students,

The rescheduled Jing Ying Football Final featuring the South Island School Under-20 Boys Football Team is taking place this Sunday 17 March, 2:00pm kick off at Mong Kok Stadium – the home of the Men’s National Football Team. The winners will be the named the best school and college football team in Hong Kong and the New Territories. Please come and cheer the team on, against our friendly ESF rival, Island School.

South Island School supporters who had a ticket for the original date will be able to redeem their original ticket at the gate on Sunday. More tickets are available at the ground – please head to the North Stand at the Mong Kok Stadium and say you are supporting SIS!

Someone Like Sawyer

Dear all,

We are very excited to announce Someone Like Sawyer, a student-written original play, is holding open auditions on 8 April and 9 April after school. During the audition, you will be asked to read and perform a section of the script.

The production, written by our very own Poppy Brian-Boys, is a thriller which will have audience members on the edge of their seats. Through this play we follow the story behind the disappearance of Ellie Ridgeway, a sweet innocent teenage girl. Told through movement and dialogue, this play is very complex and demanding. We would like to invite all of Years 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13 to come and audition for the play.

Growing Up Online

Dear Parents,

You are cordially invited to an informative and entertaining presentation, ‘Growing Up Online’, by Australian cyber-safety expert Susan Mclean. The session will be delivered with her famous ‘no-nonsense’ approach and cover the positive benefits of technology, as well as what parents need to be aware of in terms of children’s cyber-safety.

Topics include:

  • What are kids doing online – The popular social networking sites and apps such as Secret Calculator, Musical.ly, Instagram & Yubo as well as live streaming sites.
  • Online Grooming – What is it, when and how does it occur? What are the warning signs and what to do if you suspect this is happening to your child.
  • Cyberbullying – What it is, where it happens, what it looks like, how to prevent and what to do if it occurs. Also, the legal consequences and the possible criminal charges.
  • Sharing Nudes – The taking and sending of explicit images. The social and emotional consequences as well as the Law.
  • Top Tips – How to assist the children in your care to stay safe online via parental controls and restriction passcodes.
  • Problematic Internet use and gaming issues.

Phoebe Huang at Music Festival with 93 marks!

Last Friday, Phoebe Huang won 1st place with high honours from in the 71st Hong Kong Schools Music Festival Grade 8 Piano Solo competition. She played Prelude and Fugue in D, BWV 850 by Bach. The adjudicator commented that her technique was fine, musicianship was splendid, and most importantly, she played with musical elegance and from her heart. She is committed!

She received an honours score with 93 marks. Congratulations Phoebe!

SIS IB Art Exhibition 2019

The South Island School IB Art Exhibition is coming up on Friday 29 March at 2:00pm – 5:00pm at The Space. We would like to invite parents to come by.
