Nicholas Ng (12B2) recently received the Chief Scout’s Award in the Sectional Highest Award Commendation Ceremony held by the Scout Association of Hong Kong. The Chief Scout’s Award is the highest award in the Scout Section, aiming at developing leadership and a sense of responsibility. The winning of this award shows that Nicholas put in for self-development, community services and environmental awareness. We are proud to see Nicholas making a difference!

Vive la poésie!
Paul Verlaine, Michel Houellebecq, Jacques Prévert, Augustin-Soudé, Jean Tardieu, Michel Besnier, Louguivil and Jean-Pierre Voidies were amongst some of the famous poets whose poems our students chose to interpret at this year’s Hong Kong Schools’ French Speech Competition.
Several students in Years 7, 9, 10 and 11 under the tutelage of Mesdames Catherine Dieuletraz, Marion Dechy and myself participated in the event in November of this year. They were required to learn a poem in French and to perform it for an audience and in front of native French jury members, undoubtedly a nerve-racking undertaking for them. The strict assessment criteria included credit for their interpretation of the poem, their engagement with the audience and their delivery of the poem.
All of our students performed with poise and confidence and a notable mention is extended to Michele Liu, Sarah Shum, Carlijn Van Der Weijst, Tiya Shah (Y11), Maddy Yates, Nathaniel Wong (Y10), Conrad Ip, Jason Liu (Y9), Amaanat Rekhi, Sonia Poon, Calista, Viki Yang, Oscar Wong and Julian Ing (Y7) who gave commendable performances, with accurate pronunciation and intonation.
This year’s winners were:
Michele Liu in the Y11 cohort who won first prize in the S5 Girls competition with her poem Sagesse – Extrait XV by Paul Verlaine (Ode, tribute to the powerful and beautiful sea).
Nathaniel Wong and Maddy Yates who received a Second Runner Up place award in the Year 10 cohort with their poem Les Visiteurs by Michel Houellebecq and Pour faire le portrait d’un oiseau de Jacques Prévert and Oscar Wong, who also received a Second Runner Up place award in the Y7 Cohort with his poem Clown by Michel Besnier. Extended congratulations to these candidates, knowing that the competition was again very tough this year!
The two events (one of which was held at SIS this year) brought together various Hong Kong schools and tough competitors such as St Paul’s Covent School, Diocesan’s Boys School, La Salle College, Shatin College, Marymount School, St Margaret’s School and also helped to make links with the wider French community. It has allowed our students to showcase their knowledge of the French language and to perform on stage in a foreign language for which they will receive a very special certificate. Ultimately, it has also provided new experiences and unforgettable memories for our students.
I also would like to extend my appreciation to our wonderful team of prefects: Austin Gigi, Wendy Lee, Val Shiu, Paco Chow, Ava Kim, Athulram Rajagopal, Carla Cousins, Janice Chan, Charlotte Dawson, Daniel Leong, Helen Lee, Jacqueline Lin, Juliana Yue, Michelle Cheng, Marco Wong, Sua Jung, Max Yuen, without whom the opening ceremony of the French Speech Competition would not have been so successfully hosted.

The sports team are looking for equestrian (horse riding) riders to join the SIS Equestrian Team with a view to entering the Hong Kong Inter-school Competitions after Christmas. Any pupils interested should contact with Mr. Redding as soon as possible.
Another busy morning for our Sports Department with a great start to our Boys B Grade Badminton in the HKSSF competition on a Saturday morning as they played their semi-final against Lingnan Hang Yee Memorial Secondary School and won 3.
After one month of preliminary round matches, South Island School’s B Grade Boys Badminton team competed in the finals of HKSSF, Hong Kong Island Division 2 badminton competition in Chai Wan Sports Centre. Being the second runner-up in 2017, our students were aiming for something much more difficult.
They were then advanced to the finals which was played at 11am. In the championship match, SIS sent out Victor Chu, Christopher Chung, Matthew Fu, Hong-Zhi Ee and Colin Wong against five strong players from St. Mark’s School. That was one of the most intense championship matches of the day and the game deuced for many points before winning. Parents and supporters cheered from all four sides of the badminton court after SIS won the tough fourth set 29:27. This concluded our victory and the final result is 3 to 1.
Well done to all the boys, Colin Wong, Matthew Fu, Christopher Chung, Victor Chu, Hong Zhi Ee, Yin Sing, Martin Yulo, Eugene Wong. Special thanks to Mr Lee and Mr Pang for training and taking the boys to their games! Much appreciated.
On the other hand, we had our Girls Tennis team playing at Victoria Park. They played against Wah Yan College Kowloon and lost 0.5-5.5. The girls played very well against a strong opposition despite having the captain away. Woman of the match goes to Nicole Chen. Great effort from all the girls!
On Tuesday, we had three teams competing in the afternoon. We had the ISSFHK U20 Boys Football, Years 7 and 8’s Girls Football and our A Grade Girls Basketball. We definitely had some great results that evening with our U20 Boys Football playing against Kiangsu-Chekiang College, International Section, and winning 12-1. Amazing result from the boys! Man of the match goes to Kei Sasaki. The Year 7 and 8’s played their first match of the season with some girls playing the first game! But unfortunately, they fell short against International College Hong Kong and lost 1-2. Great performance from all the girls and keep it up! Woman of the match goes to Tessa Schraven.
With some injuries and different events going on at school, our A Grade Girls Basketball played against KGV in the ESF semi-final again at South Island. With only 6 players due to injuries and commitment, the girls pulled themselves together and played a very good game. The final score was 50-22. Congratulations to our A Grade Girls and good luck in your Finals on Friday 7 December 2018!
On Thursday night, we had our HKSSF B Grade Boys Basketball games against St. Joseph’s. SIS won 40-38. This was an immense performance and incredible tension was sustained by the boys especially when we only had 6 players. Great job and let’s keep it up boys! Man of the match goes to Julien Bourron.
Last but not least, SIS A Grade Rugby returned to the winners’ circle and once again became the HK Schools Champions with a hard fought 29 – 24 win over HKIS. In a high intensity game, South Island had to come back from being down at half-time for the second time in two weeks, showing the superior strength of their squad. While rugby is ultimately a team sport, the leadership of James Francis (13S2) was a difference maker this season.
South Island School MUN students attended Victoria Shanghai Academy MUN conference last weekend. Three Year 13 students were elected to act as chairs within councils. These were: Valerie Hui chairing the Security Council, committee Michi Kang chairing Unicef Health Committee; and Joanne Fu chairing the Historical Committee. Shannon Kong and Adrian Cheung in Year 13 represented Kuwait in the Security Council and were awarded best delegates for the entire conference, which is an excellent achievement. Also featuring would be the Best Dressed Award and Most Participating ESF Schools Award, as well as Schools Relay category from local Secondary school students!
