Issue No. 14 (6 December 2019)

Survey on the use of technology

Technology plays an ever increasing role in all of our lives and as a school we are looking to explore further how our students engage with it. By gathering information on this topic, we hope to devise further strategies to ensure that students make the most of the technological opportunities available to them, but are also protected against some potentially harmful effects. We are writing to ask that you help us with this by completing a survey on your child’s use of technology at home. We hope that this will help to provide us with a more holistic picture of our students’ technology use.

Specifically, we would like to use this data to inform future curriculum, parent workshops and pastoral interventions. All data will be collected anonymously, and you are of course welcome to skip any questions that you feel unable to answer.

Here is the link to the survey:  Family Digital Device Survey

We would be grateful if you could complete the survey by Friday 13th December. We really appreciate you taking the time to provide us with this useful information. Thank you!

On Thursday 6th February (5.30-7.15pm) as part of our annual E-Safety focus week,  we will be inviting parents into school for a technology and well-being event. This will include a series of workshops focusing on a healthy approach to technology, and a screening of a documentary on teenage use of social media called “Like”. More information and sign up details for this event will be emailed to you after the Christmas holiday.

Should you have further queries or concerns regarding the Family Digital Device survey please do not hesitate to contact me.

Kind regards,

BTEC Art & Design Letterpress Trip

As part of the BTEC Art & Design graphic design unit, students visited a letterpress workshop to print their own graphic designs. We had a great weekend on 29th-30th November with 80 students at a tented camp in the Sai Kung Country Park. 5 of our groups were with outward bound Hong Kong and the remaining 9 with South Island Staff, The weather was on our side and helped to make this a successful experience for all of the students. As always this trip was supported by a fantastic and dedicated volunteer staff team of 19 so a big thank you to them and the outward bound instructors. The students camped overnight on Friday and the SIS students enjoyed a night exercise. The next day students hiked some challenging routes with full packs. Most students are now ready for their final assessment in February.

RGS Schools Outreach to Year 8 Talk December 4th

A group of year 8’s were fortunate enough to hear from famous wildlife photographer Paul Mackenzie, who shared some of his amazing wildlife photos from around the globe. In addition to some beautiful photography, Paul was able to explain a little about the stories behind the photographs as well as the conservation issues and dangers facing many of the animals. Paul was born in Kenya but now lives in Hong Kong and has been a professional wildlife photographer since the mid nineties. Year 8’s were captivated by his talk and asked some great questions too. Thanks to the Royal Geographical Society and to Ms ChiLe for making this possible.

SIS Netball Stars

Alyssa Wong ( 11N1), Samantha Cho (11S2), Sophie Langford ( 11K2) and Leanne Chan (12B2) returned to Hong Kong last Saturday after a week of Netball Matches against different countries during the 11th International Youth Netball Challenge at Singapore Sports School.  It was definitely a valuable experiences for the girls.

Here is Samantha’s report from the championships:

During the week in Singapore, both the teams had many ups and downs and at the end of the whole week there were lots of tired bodies and minds after 8 hard games against top notch competitors from across the globe. It was the perfect opportunity for us to develop together with players and set plays that we were not familiar with. This opportunity allowed us to play a lot of netball with all the intensity from games and learning how to keep going and be determined in every circumstance. Both teams went into the games with 100% focus and 110% effort. We encouraged and motivated each other in pushing through the pain and furthering our netball skills and set plays. Both teams came out of the tour extremely proud of what they had accomplished.

Well done to all.
