Robert Chik – The Class of 1995

“Lots has changed and also stayed the same.”

Robert came back to visit South Island School during the Easter break to learn what has changed since he left SIS at 1991. Learning that there is a new building and better facilities, he noticed the playground has not changed much. It was a place that reminded him of his beloved daily routine, which was to get off the school bus at the main entrance and then head straight to the Lower Playground for games before classes started.

These were not his only memories. Robert told us there used to be a musical band consisting of teachers who performed for students. What the school tour also reminded Robert was of Mrs Chapman (who is retiring this year), as well as his science teacher Ms Su Cowland and his favourite teacher Mr Martin Campion.

Asked what his favourite part of school was, Robert shared with us that the best thing at SIS was to meet people from all over the world. It was a wonderful environment for him to be introduced to different cultures and be aware of people’s differences, which prepared him for life with better people skills.

Robert came from Quarry Bay School and spent three years with Aylward House before relocating to Cape Town. After finishing his undergraduate studies, he completed his master’s degree at the University of Surrey in the UK. He is now based in Winchester, UK as a chartered structural engineer.
