Netflix, Common Sense Media and Certification

Parents are advised to take careful note of the certification provided by Netflix for their television and film texts. More specifically, the series 13 Reasons Why has provoked a great deal of media attention particularly with regards to the issue of suicide and an extremely graphic end to season 2. The series is classified as 16+ but in school, tutors are hearing that some students in Year 8 and Year 9 have been accessing the show on television or via their mobile phones.

For further analysis and advice on texts ranging from films, to television and even computer games, please feel free to make use of Common Sense Media. The review of 13 Reasons Why (https://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/13-reasons-why) makes for some very interesting reading and as you can see, many reviewers believe the text should come with an 18+ certification rather than 16+. Common Sense Media also provides review ratings from children and teenagers, as well as adults.

Ultimately, with texts of this nature we respect your decisions as families but would urge that as often as possible, you view potentially sensitive material with your child/teenager to help mediate and discuss the relevance of images and issues reflected in the text/s.

South Island strives to offer a robust approach to Digital Citizenship whilst also supporting student development in both a social and emotional context. However, your support is greatly appreciated in reinforcing the guidance offered in school.

Thanks to all the Shtepi House team and SIS students who made this possible !!!

“Hello Room to Read champions at South Island School!

It is the moment we have all been waiting for! We are delighted to announce that South Island School has been nominated the WINNER for the MOST CREATIVE SCHOOL in Room to Read’s Active for Education School Challenge. Your prize of a USD$1000 Scholastic’s Book voucher to be used in your school’s library will be making its way to you shortly!

We are extremely thankful for your school’s donation of $19,061.60. Through your efforts, you have joined a powerful global movement reaching millions of children with the gift of education. Your donation has brought us one step closer to achieving our goal of reaching 15 million children by 2020.

We have been very impressed with the enthusiasm and dedication that South Island School has shown in your fundraising efforts. It has been wonderful to see creative ideas such as your bake sale with the cupcakes made in your school house colours, a dress up as your favourite book character and a book swap between student grades. We will be sure to pass these ideas on to other schools as inspiration!”

We look forward to your participation in our Shtepi MaD week next year!
