Power Down Day March 3rd

To South Island School community – from the South Island School Making a Difference Student Council
The increased air pollution in Hong Kong causes 2,800 premature deaths and over 90,000 hospital admissions a year, due to lung cancer, heart attack, strokes and asthma.
However, imagine a day where an entire school community halts their use of lights. Imagine a day where they halt their use of air-cons. imagine a day where they halt their use of all carbon dioxide emitting devices. This is what our school – South Island School – calls “Power down day”. This is a full day in school with minimal energy consumption, which will be held this year on Friday March 3rd.
Not only will this raise awareness of the effect of global warming on our community, but it will lower the output of harmful greenhouse gasses attacking our environment, which has an especially powerful impact in such a small and polluted region such as Hong Kong, which is 3 times more polluted than Los Angeles, New York and London. A Power down day will prevent 3 tons of Carbon Dioxide from entering our atmosphere, 3 tons of a deadly gas slowly suffocating our earth. From this small step, we can show the world – and our community – that change is possible.
Thank you in advance for your support – please check the vle for further details over the coming weeks and an exciting competition to guess how much energy will be saved on the day!
