Parental Controls & Your Child's Laptop
Mac OS X has built in to it a feature called Parental Controls that lets parents control how, when and what your child can do with the laptop. While this is a nice option, it is very powerful, so powerful in fact that it prevents our students from accessing resources they need to access. Online resources such as their school email and online education websites utilizing scripting.
We therefore requests that you do not turn Parental Controls on for your child's user account.
To support parents, all Year 7 student's user accounts have been configured as a Standard User. As a standard user, your child cannot install software or make changes to the configuration of their laptop with out your permission, or the permission of the ICT Department.
This provides you, the parent, the opportunity to have a conversation with your child about what and how you will allow them to use the laptop at home.
We have found that speaking with your child is the most effective way to facilitate their transition in to being a responsible user of technology. We strongly recommend that you set expectations with your child and their use of the laptop that are reasonable. You can use the school's Student Acceptable Policy (AUP) as a guide for expectations in your home. Click here to view the SIS AUP.
