Middle Years Students

Middle Years Curriculum

South Island is a happy and thriving community, in which individuals are given the opportunities to develop as learners and to make personalised decisions about their experiences. In Years 9 to 11 students shape their own curriculum as they develop as learners, becoming responsible risk takers.

Students in Year 9 study the broad range of subjects shown below having chosen language option and their major and minor arts options as they start to personalise their curriculum. Throughout Year 9, students are given advice and guidance to enable them to make informed decisions about which courses they would like to study in Years 10 and 11.

In Years 10 and 11, all students study a core, or common, curriculum and a range of Major Option choices which lead to certification on completion and Minor Courses which are non-certified and add breadth. The allocation of time is shown below:

In Year 11 students are guided through the three diploma pathways that we offer in Years 12 and 13 as they begin to make further decisions about choices of subjects to study at this level. Tutors, our Pathways team and subject teachers all are dedicated to helping students to make informed choices.

South Island School aims to have mature, articulate, independent young people who are ready to contribute and make a difference in the society in which they find themselves. Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles and to be proactive in the community which is evidenced in a portfolio of CAS (Creativity, Action and Service) experiences.
