Middle School
Words from the Head of Middle School
The Middle School compromises of students in Years 8, 9, 10 and 11. The Middle School is focused on supporting students in their choices and encouraging them to become responsible risk takers. We aim to prepare students for GCSE examinations and to develop their contribution and awareness for the world around them.
Students in Years 8 and 9 study a broad range of subjects similar to that of Years 7. In Year 9 students start to specialise in languages and students are given advice and guidance to enable them to make decisions about which GCSE examination courses they want to study in Years 10 and 11. This takes place in Term 1. They are encouraged to follow a balanced curriculum.
In Years 10 and 11, all students study Mathematics, English, English Literature, a Language, Science, Physical Education, Learning Futures, Enrichment Programme and a further three subjects at GCSE or IGCSE level.
In the first term of Year 11 important decisions have to be taken with regard to subjects studied at International Baccalaureate level, Advanced Diploma or Intermediate Diploma. Tutor times are dedicated to helping students make the correct choices.
South Island School Middle School is a happy and thriving community, in which individuals are given the opportunities and support necessary to develop their academic and extra-curricular interests. We aim to produce mature, articulate, independent and caring young people, ready to contribute to the society in which they find themselves.
Within the Middle School, our aim is to encourage students to take on Leadership roles within the tutor group and to gain personal experience in different roles of leadership. As a school we try to encourage students to be proactive in their community, which in turn is a necessary component of the Diploma programmes. Many of the roles students undertake can go towards their CAS (Creativity. Action and Service) experience and be recorded in their CAS journal. Students are expected to contribute 20 hours or more in each area of commitment.
