Gifted and Talented

"All students have the right to access a comprehensive curriculum that provides relevant, worthwhile educational programs, acknowledges differences in pace and learning style and enables them to participate, learn and experience success."

ESF Gifted and Talented Curriculum Group 2006

South Island School endeavours to identify and provide opportunites for students who are talented and committed to realise their potential. This notion underpins our school aims:

  • To produce enthusiastic, active, independent and lifelong learners
  • To provide an excellent academic education through which our students can achieve their personal best
  • To provide outstanding enrichment opportunities within and beyond the school curriculum

Gifted and talented students are identified using a range of objective and subjective criteria. The specific needs of these students can then be met by our flexible academic and co-curricular program.

The South Island Gifted and Talented Program incorporates some of the following:

  • Differentiated curriculum delivery
  • Enrichment/extension opportunities
  • Annual internal identification and monitoring
  • Standardised Benchmark Testing
  • Subject acceleration
  • Competitions at school, region and international level
  • Tournament of Minds
  • Future Problem Solving
  • Debating
  • Young Musician's Programme

The school's Gifted and Talented Coordinator is Mr Michael Evershed
