English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL)
The ESOL programme places all students in mainstream classes as soon as they arrive in School and aims to provide as much intensive in context, support as possible. Members of the ESOL Department work in the classroom with students wherever they can in Years 7-9 and on a one-to-one and small group teaching basis in Years 10-13 if this is required by the needs of the students. Students are identified for support from Primary schools, by mainstream teachers and they can refer themselves for help. The ESOL teachers diagnose the areas for improvement and will support students until they have improved in a particular problem area.
ESOL is taught through the content of the mainstream curriculum and not through ESL course books. The ESOL teachers have knowledge of the curriculum content and Schemes of Work in the subjects where they work with students.
There are two ESOL teachers in the School: Lynette Ovens and Vici Egan.
