Students Academic Achievements

One of the school aims is 'to provide an excellent academic education through which students can achieve their personal best'. As a non-selective school we recognise that not all students can achieve levels of excellence but all students can and should achieve their personal best that will allow them to access the best possible, higher education/further education and/or employment opportunities.

For us the most important measure of academic success is the value added that each student achieves. By this we mean the success achieved at each stage at or beyond the expected level as predicted by baseline standardise tests such as the CAT(cognitive abilities test) and YELLIS and ALIS). At school level we analyse the value added for each student at public examination level (IGCSE in year 11 and IB diploma in year 13) to ensure that we are achieving good levels of value added as a school.

In terms of raw exam results we compare ourselves with the private/international/ independent school sectors in the UK and elsewhere where schools are largely selective. The ESF schools largely achieve similar exam results for both IGCSE and the IB Diplom although there are slight variations from year to year. As a rough guide (for those who are aware of English/International statistics) the average IB Diploma points score is around 32 (with about 10% achieving 40+ points) and at GCSE 95% of students achieve 5 A*-C grades with about 50% of grades being at A*/A level.

In addition to the IB diploma some of our students will sit the ESF Diploma at Advanced Intermediate and Foundation level. These graduating qualifications will involve a range of externally accredited courses and at advanced level include BTEC courses that are equivalent to English A levels and give full university recognition.

*The world averages for 2009 are not yet available but do not change significantly year on year.

It is particularly pleasing that such a high % of our students achieved more than 40 points. You will see from the world averages that globally this is quite rare, however given the nature of the IB diploma even passing at 24 points is a very significant achievement indeed.
