2009
Graduates from SIS’s first IB cohort have now secured university places in all four corners of the globe (if a sphere can have corners), with the exception of Australia for which applications are only now underway. As in the recent past, the UK accounts for approximately half this number; the USA just less than a quarter and, as we expected, Hong Kong exceeding 10% .
Among the most selective destinations this year were Cambridge, Harvard, Stanford, Cornell and UPenn. Exeter and King’s College London proved the most popular UK destinations with NYU and the University of Toronto taking the top spots in North America. The most popular destination worldwide, however, was HKU with no less than 8 South Island students matriculating this month.
In terms of degree choice or majors, these were refreshingly varied compared to some previous years, with a noticeable growth in areas such as Political Science and Film Production. It was also pleasing to see an open-minded approach to applications resulting in students joining a top women’s liberal arts college (Barnard), an Italian Fashion School (Istituto Europeo di Design) and one of the top colleges in the beautiful eastern region of Canada (St. Francis Xavier in Nova Scotia).
2008
With the exception of our Australian applicants, we now know the final Higher Education Destinations of approximately 90% of our class of 2008. Once again, the UK is the most popular destination with approximately half of the year group: popular universities are:
UK University:Number of Student
- Imperial:5
- LSE:4
- Nottingham:4
- UCL:3
- Durham:3
- Newcastle:3
- Bristol:3
- Manchester:3
While Business Management and related disciplines remain popular, 18% of the UK cohort entered Medicine or Law and other degree courses range from Aviation Engineering to Veterinary Nursing. The University of Pennsylvania, NYU and the University of Southern California are again favoured destinations in the USA, while two of our students have headed to Emerson College in Boston for its strength in the field of media and communication. Hong Kong and Canada are neck and neck with HKU and the University of Toronto taking 5 students a piece from South Island.
