10th Anniversary SIS Film Awards

On the 9th of June, teachers, students, alumni and Film/Media professionals came together for the 10th anniversary Film & Media Awards ceremony. Held in the Space and MC’d by Jocelyn Chun (12K2) and Luca Howard (12C1), students received prizes in 19 categories ranging from those in Bauhinia house competing for the Bodega Media Foundation Film Award right the way through to our senior section awards, which identified the best overall fiction film, which went to Why Can’t You Be Happy by Kate Hon (12M2), Andrew Choy (12N2) and Andre Leung (12B2) and the best non-fiction film which went to Jake Grubb (13N1) for his emotive, Story of 1958. Jake, Andrew, Kate and Andre all scooped two prizes each winning best BTEC Film & TV Production student, best cinematographer, best director and best sound designer respectively. Wing-Ka Lau (11S1) was another double winner having taken Best GCSE Media Student and Best GCSE promotional video.

Several former winners were invited from the impressive SIS Film & Media alumni to give awards. This included Stanley Leung (Best ESF & SIS Film Award, 2011), Mingki Park (Best cinematographer and Best Film, 2010), Esme Anderson (Best Scriptwriter, 2011), Daniella Means (Best GCSE production work, 2006), Alexa Bautista (2012/13 Bodega Media Editor’s Award, Bodega Media Film Student Award and Bodega Media Film Award) and Christopher Wong (Best Director, 2015).

Samuel Kindler, one of three originators of the idea for the Film Awards from over a decade ago, started the ceremony by paying tribute to the students, teachers and alumni gathered together. In addition, a superb 5mins retrospective video edited together by former IB Film student, Kaho Yoshikawa was played to celebrate a decade of quality filmmaking at SIS. Belinda Howard awarded the Best Sound Designer Award on behalf of her daughter, Dani Howard. (Sound Design Award, 2011, Best Film Student, 2011 and ‘Best GCSE Film Award, 2009.’

Finally, the thanks of the Film & Media department went to benefactor, Jennifer Deayton for providing the trophies and awarding the final three categories.
